Description
Two black figures wearing red royal military uniforms and hats fashioned from poppies walk together. The older of the two is holding a floral staff and resting his fingers on his sheathed sword. The younger figure plays a drum made from a poppy bud. The accompanying text reads:
"On scarlet Poppy-heads a-blaze".

Whilst unacceptable today this particular image reveals Crane's exposure to imperialist ideas, as does the reference to empire on page 13. In the same way that his illustrations for children can be linked to his socialist involvement, these figures can be seen to represent more serious politics.
Other examples of Crane's commissions regarding this subject matter are the Imperial Federation League's 1886 map and his cotton fabric titled 'The British Empire' from 1887, both of which also depict romanticised figures in an allegorical manner. It is argued by Felix Driver that Crane's allegiance to pastoralism and encouragement of manual labour were values shared by the settler colonies of the empire. Therefore images such as this one can shed light on the complex relationship between socialism and imperialism in the nineteenth century (1).
