Title
At the Pass (Sekiya) Chapter 16 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
Mitsuuji (Genji) is shown crouching down beside a woman's simple palanquin. Within the palanquin there is fabric decorated with 'Genji mon', a design made from incense sticks that corresponds to a specific chapter in the 'Tale of Genji'. A black lacquer vanity case, also decorated with 'Genji mon', hangs from woven roof of the palanquin. Red maple leaves surround them indicating that the season is autumn.
The woman is shown standing with a raised sleeve to her mouth. Her kimono is blue and decorated with plovers. Mitsuuji's kimono is patterned with the same blue and red flower that appear on the clothing of the young girl pictured in the previous chapter's illustration (Yomogiu). Perhaps this girl is Mitsuuji's daughter.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Sekiya', Chapter 16. In this chapter Utsusemi, the wife of the Deputy Governor of Hitachi, by chance meets Genji at the Osaka barrier. Utsusemi's retinue is returning to Kyoto, while Genji's party is on its way to the Ishiyama shrine. Utsusemi's carriages stop and allow Genji to pass. Genji uses Kogimi, Utsusemi's younger brother, to send her a message. This chapter explores the frustration experienced by separated lovers.
After Utsusemi's husband dies, she becomes a nun in order to avoid being forced into a marriage with her stepson, the Governor of Kawachi.
