Title
Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket
Description
Edinburgh Castle, towering over the buildings of the Grassmarket provides a spectacular backdrop for this bustling scene in the Vennel. The street is busy with working men and women as well as several horses and carts and carriages. The coach in the centre would have left from the White Hart Inn, the oldest surviving tavern in the city. Kirkwood's custom house can be seen to the right of the picture. A small boy cases a donkey with a stick and a man pushes a wheelbarrow.
