Description

A cart carrying barrels travels along the Canongate past the old Tolbooth in Edinburgh. The Tolbooth has a tall spire and a clock mounted on it. Tenement buildings line the High Street which is dotted with street lamps. Many people are walking along the road.

This image has been chosen for the Edinburgh - Past and Present Exhibition by Kirsty Balfour, International Swimmer - "I love the feel of the old buildings along the Royal Mile. You can really soak up the dynamic history of the place as you walk slowly past the dark closes and wee narrow doorways. The Royal Mile is such a unique street and it remains much the same now as it was then" Kirsty Balfour.

The Canongate Tolbooth, built in 1591, is the oldest remaining building in the Canongate. It was the administrative centre for the old burgh of Canongate, originally separate from Edinburgh. It is now home to the People's Story Museum.
