Central Library's Lending department on the ground floor is exactly where it was on the opening day in 1890. However when the library opened, the public were unable to browse and had to request items from a board listing titles (called Cotgreave indicators) above the doorway. When a book was IN or available it showed Blue, when OUT or on loan it showed Red.
