Royal proclamation, Mercat Cross, Edinburgh, February 1952

Description

A Guard of Honour lines up in rows in front of the Mercat Cross on the High Street. The soldiers wear caps and hold rifles with bayonets over their shoulders. Dignitaries and officials wearing ceremonial dress stand on the platform of the Mercat Cross and address the assembled crowd.

As the former Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was proclaimed in a ceremony in London to be Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of this Realm, and all her other realms and territories, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, her Scottish subjects proclaimed her accession to the throne on the same day from the Mercat Cross on Edinburgh's Royal Mile. A large crowd gathered on Edinburgh's High Street to mark the occasion and the ceremony included trumpet calls, a Guard of Honour, the National Anthem and a Royal Salute from the guns at the Castle.
The Proclamation then proceeded to the Gate of the Castle, before moving on to the Palace of Holyrood followed by the Pier and Shore of Leith.
