Taymouth Castle was built in the 19th century by the 1st marquis of Breadalbane. The castle that was built replaced the existing Balloch Castle which had been built in the 1550s by Sir Colin Campbell. Taymouth is so named due to its geographical position on the edge of Loch Tay, near Kenmore, Perthshire. During her reign Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the Castle and later during the Second World War the government requisitioned the Castle and put it to use as a convalescence home. The present day owners of the castle try to maintain the castle in its current form and Mr. Norman Chalmers the caretaker received an MBE in 1998 for services to the nation in looking after the castle.
