Over eight million men became prisoners of war during the First World War. Germany in particular took many prisoners in the first year of the war, not thinking that the conflict would continue for so long. The numbers of POWs caused problems for all sides in the conflict in terms of where to house them and how to feed them. There was accusations of prisoner brutality by all sides mostly caused by the use of them as forced labour in the war zones.
