Title
The Yser
Description
"We are on our way to Calais."
"The Germans in their bid for Calais made violent efforts, from the middle of October 1914, to break through the thin link of trenches held by the Belgian army, and a mixed force of English troops and French marines. The Germans were finally thrown back beyond the Yser by the opening of the coastal sluices which flooded the country. Observe how by the masterly tranquillity of the drawing the human horror of the scene becomes secondary. There is the calm of death in these flooded meadows."
