Description
30th June. Verbliani.
Well, my long promised day is alas! Gone! But oh How I enjoyed it! It came off yesterday & I spent it with H. - one of the Transport, who was also free for the whole day. The C.O. of one of an M.J. Company near us, picked us with his car at the end of our road at 8a.m. & off we started on our "joyride"! We went first to Vodena & from there on & on along the Monastir road past Osburo Lake & through the Lornicheva Pass, the famous pass, where 2 years before the Serbs fought so brilliantly, pushed back the Bulgars & then stormed Kaymashalan. Gornichero village & ridge were [?] on Sept 12th-16th - the attach began with the triumphant rush of the Serbs up the farmers pass. Then Banilza & Flouna were captured. Then came the culminating struggle for Raymachalan. During that past fortnight of Sept. the Serbian Army fought a battle of giants for the heights. It now seems marvellous that any force of men could have captured positions of such strength.
But the Serbs were determined to climb the wall that shut them out from their own country & they did it! The achievement was superb & showed the Serbs' wonderful determination & bravery, but their toll of casualties was very heavy - still Raymachalan was theirs! The mountain is 9000 ft high & v. steep & rugged. The
