The Princess Margaret Rose Hospital opened in 1932, the first orthopaedic hospital in Scotland, treating children affected by tuberculosis, osteomyelitis, rickets and polio. In 1957 its name was changed to the Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital, reflecting the increasing proportion of adult patients, partly due to an increase in road accidents and vaccination against polio. In the 1960s and 1970s it was well known as a centre for amputee rehabilitation and research to help children suffering the effects of thalidomide. It finally closed in 2002.
