Restalrig Parish dates back to the 12th century, and in 1487 it was created a Collegiate Church by King James III and known as the Deanery of Restalrig. Such was its importance, that in 1560, it was targeted for destruction by supporters of the Reformation. South Leith became the Parish Church and it wasn’t until 1836 that St Margaret’s was built on the ruined foundations of the former church.
St Margaret’s is adjoined to St Triduana's Chapel. Originally, two-storeyed, the lower level which is built partly below ground, survived the demolition of 1560. It is uniquely hexagonal in shape and was restored in 1907-8. It is named after St Triduana who resided in Restalrig after blinding herself. Pilgrims travelled to the chapel believing holy water from the spring beneath the chapel could cure eye ailments.
