The oldest surviving house in the conservation area of Restalrig is the ‘Wright’s house’ with the distinctive crow-stepped gable, dating from 1678. The row of adjoining houses once had shop fronts at ground level.
Restalrig was an ancient village on the outskirts of Edinburgh long since subsumed into the city. Restalrig Parish dates back to the 12th century, and in 1487 it was created a Collegiate Church by King James III and known as the Deanery of Restalrig. A section of the Deanery wall still stands on Restalrig Road South not far from the Wright’s house and across the road from St Margaret’s Parish Church. St Margaret’s was built in 1836 on the ruined foundations of the former church.
