Trinity Chain Pier drew in locals and visitors alike to swim in the bracing waters of the Firth of Forth. The pier was originally opened in 1821 for steam ships offering pleasure trips and cruises along the Forth. This advert, now in fragile condition, shows how the use changed to accommodate swimmers, boaters and gym-goers instead. The advert also shows how well connected the area was to central Edinburgh, with buses, trams and trains available to transport visitors to the pier.

In 1898 a bad storm damaged the pier, leaving only a few sections intact. It was never rebuilt. Today, the site of the pier is marked by the Old Chain Pier pub, which had originally been the pier booking office.
