Description
The view up the hill from the Foot of Causewayside, Edinburgh. Houses and businesses line the street. On the left-hand side is Ratcliffe's Family Laundry and James Cochrane Coach Hirer. A man is leaning against the gate to the coach hirers with a large dog lying beside him. A horse and carriage is being tended by two men on the road whilst being watched by a small boy with a flat cap on.

Causewayside, or Causeyside, formed part of an ancient approach to Edinburgh from the south. It now refers to a section of road from West Preston Street, close to the Meadows, to Duncan Street.
