Description

The view down the steps of the Vennel, Edinburgh. The wide stepped street is divided in half by a black handrail. Stone walls stand on either side of the road at the top and houses at the bottom. Above the scene stands Edinburgh Castle on the Castle Rock. The barracks building can be seen to the far left and the rounded half moon battery to the right.

The Vennel is a narrow street in Edinburgh leading from West Port near the Grassmarket to Heriot Place near George Heriot's School. 'Vennel' is a Scots word meaning 'steep lane'.
