Title
Princes Street looking east from the foot of the mound
Description
The view along Princes Street in Edinburgh takes in many off the city's landmarks. On one side of the road are grand buildings and shops on the other is Princes Street Gardens, the Scott Monument and the clock tower of the Balmoral Hotel. On the cobblestone road is a tram and other vehicles while on the pavement are numerous pedestrians. The monuments of Calton Hill are visible, most notably the National Monument and Nelson's Monument.

This image has been chosen for the Edinburgh - Past and Present Exhibition by Jamie Fraser, Managing Director of Hamilton & Inches - "This picture made me smile. I included it because the clock above the Balmoral Hotel was installed by Hamilton & Inches - the company are Royal Clockmakers as well as Silversmiths - and I check it keenly every night when I am running for the train from Waverley back to Croy: traditionally set to be five minutes fast, many a commuter has been caught out, including me, when the clock loses time. But the smile came when I spotted the tram and what looks like the North British and Mercantile building - 100 years on and the trams are being restored; think how many people would like to see the old buildings restored as well, so that Prince's Street could be that world class shopping street that, given its aspect, it ought to be" Jamie Fraser.
Princes Street is one of the main thoroughfares and shopping areas in Edinburgh. It was created as part of James Craig's New Town development and named in honour of George III's sons. With the exception of St John's Church there is no building on the southern side of Princes Street, allowing spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle and Old Town.
