up on to some of the baggage carts or munition waggons belonging to the Division, which had already started to move. So on we jumped (or rather scrambled) & once more found ourselves part of "The long, long trail a- winding." Lilias & I got together. How I wish you could
have seen us, perched sky-high on the top of a waggon piled up with dear knows what not, clinging on for dear life. We bumped & jostled along most "gaily"! Such confusion everywhere. Horses, neighing, stamping, jumping, were dragged & pulled & threatened. Officers from stout colonels to very young Lieutenants came cursing & shouting, first this way, then tat. There was gloom, gloom everywhere under the evening sky. Sometimes the reflections of distant rockets would shudder & fade across the pale evening light; incessantly, from every corner of the world, came the screaming rattle of carts & always clouds & clouds of dust & the thunder & roar of the guns. Bind Behind us was our little Boul-boul-mic in flames - little more than 24 hours since we had taken leave of our little camp there. The scene away across by Constanza
