Description

Ramshackle houses line St. Ninian's Lane in Leith. Many of the houses have pantile roofs and external stairs. A boy in a cap stands at the top of one of the stairs. At the end of the lane a horse and cart can be seen making its way out of the lane. It appears to have been delivering sacks, which lie beside some of the houses.

Quayside Street is situated a short distance to the south of Commercial Street in Leith. Before 1966 it was known as Church Street, and before 1890 as St Ninian's Lane. Earlier still the street was called St Ninian's Wynd.

Leith is situated in the north of Edinburgh where the Water of Leith joins the Firth of Forth. It has acted as Edinburgh's maritime connection for many centuries, and continues to be one of the UK's busiest ports. It was incorporated into Edinburgh in 1920 having previously been a separate burgh. It is now home to the Scottish Executive's main offices, Edinburgh's Sikh temple, the Royal Yacht Britannia and Ocean Terminal, a large shopping and entertainment complex.
