Excerpt from page - "North Loch 1820 - The long talked of improvement on the North Loch have been commenced with a spirit which promises their speedy completion.
A wall pf nine feet in height is now erected around the base of the castle rock from the Grassmarket to the Manse (St Cuthberts) at the end of the loch(now called Kings Stables Road) and when finished the west division of the loch will be completely enclosed. The wall in the inside of the parapet wall along Princes Street is already edged with loose wood and parallel with this one on a lower level, another walk has been laid out.
Labourers are actively engaged employed in levelling the ground of the loch, which we understand is to be converted into a garden of the most tasteful and elegant plan, and to add to the effect ,those parts of the Castle Rock where soil can lie are to be planted with trees". Edinburgh Evening Courant Sept 11 1820.
