The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, a residence of Sir Thomas North Dick Lauder, Bart., is situated in the southern suburbs of Edinburgh named after it. It is an ancient pile, in the baronial style of architecture, and, with its antique turrets, terraces, and gardens, which are preserved in their original style, it is an excellent specimen of an old Scottish residence. The house was called after the adjoining property, which was the grange or farm of the Collegiate Church of St Giles, of Edinburgh.
In 1831 great improvements were made on the house, under the direction of Mr W. H. Playfair, architect. In the entrance hall there is an elaborately carved sofa, or, "langsettle," the upper portion of which formed Cardinal Beaton's bedstead. The other portions are fragments of the wood work of Elgin Cathedral.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection, Central Library, Edinburgh.
The Grange House was demolished in 1936.
