Description

A view of the interior courtyard of Well Court, Dean Village, Edinburgh set against a brilliant blue sky. The stone houses with their red rosemary tiles and leaded windows line the edge of the courtyard. The shadow of a tall clock tower can be seen filling the courtyard. In the centre clothes poles hold a line of washing out to dry. Two sets of clock hands lie at the foot of one of the clothes poles. A workman sits with his back against a wall to the right of a large archway.

Well Court is located in Dean Village, Edinburgh. It was commissioned by John Findlay, owner of The Scotsman and finished in 1886. Findlay instructed architect Sydney Mitchell to create model housing to accommodate 55 working class families. Tenents had to abide by strict rules which included a curfew (they were locked out if they got home late) and attending church. The houses have recently been renovated with the help of a grant from Edinburgh World Heritage.
