Edinburgh and Scottish Collection
Originally there were two entrances to the Reference Library, one for ladies and one for gentlemen. When the building first opened it was capable of accommodating 160 male readers and 36 female ones.
The Reference Library's dome is one of the finest of its type in Scotland and the room remains almost as it was originally intended with built-in catalogue on the east wall and galleries above the book bays. It has windown on 4 sides, designed to make the best use of natural light.
