A lively street scene showing tenement housing with shops at ground floor level. There are two separate groups of people. The group on the left is dressed smartly and wearing fancy hats, whilst the group of women on the right are more shabbily dressed. Washing hangs on a line from the windows above.

This is a photograph from 'The Life History of a Slum Child' focusing on the community living in the Canongate. The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace.
