Description

Letter sent by The Port of Leith Dock offices, Tower Place, Leith, on 6 June 1917 to Alfred H. Roberts, containing a reference for James Hume. The letterhead is printed in black ink on white paper, and the text of the letter has been typewritten. The signature and amendments are written in ink, the signature being that of Walter Telford, Dockmaster.

The letter reads:

This is to certify that the bearer, JAMES HUME, has held a Leith Trinity House General Pilots License since 13th August, 1912, to pilot any class of vessel from St. Abbs Head on South, and Fifeness on the North, to Carron Roads in the Firth of Forth. This License also allows him to act as a General Pilot for Granton Harbour.

He also holds a 2nd class General Pilots License since 13th August 1912, granted by the Leith Harbour and Dock Commissioners, to pilot vessels not exceeding 800 tons nett. out and in the Port of Leith, which License was cancelled for a 1st class General Pilots License on 13th March 1914 to pilot any class of vessel out and in the Port of Leith where he is engaged at present.

When acting as Pilot of any vessels entering or leaving the Harbour and Docks he always handled them with good judgment and caution and was very fortunate in keeping clear of damage.

I have much pleasure in stating that during the time he / he served under me, viz. from 13th August 1912 until 6th June 1917, he has always been strictly sober, courteous, and at all times attentive to his duties, and has given me entire satisfaction as a First Class Pilot. I can recommend him to anyone requiring his services.

He has at present only temporarily resigned as Pilot for the duration of the War, and has already made application to the Admiralty for a 2nd-Lieut. Commission in the R.N.V.R., and I wish him every success.
