The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'The ancient mansion-house of Merchiston, the property of the Dowager Lady Napier, is situated in the south-western suburbs of Edinburgh.
It is a castellated building of some size, and of a symmetrical appearance, of which the main portion is very ancient, while to the front modern additions have been made In ancient times it was a square keep, with a projection at one side, and was considered a fortalice of some strength. It formed the key of the south-western approach to the city, and was consequently frequently besieged. In 1572 it was beleaguered, and in 1573 it was bombarded from the castle, because it was occupied by the king's men who intercepted the provisions coming to town. It was used as a prison by Drury, the English general sent by Queen Elizabeth to the assistance of the Regent Morton.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
The only part of Merchiston Castle still standing is the tower which is incorporated within Napier University.
