A large crowd of people have gathered on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle to watch a parade of soldiers. The buildings of Castlehill mark the beginning of the Royal Mile. The North British Hotel(now the Balmoral Hotel) and the monuments of Calton Hill can be seen in the distance.

The Castle Esplanade is an area of open ground between Edinburgh Castle and Castlehill. The area is used for the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Calton Hill is situated at the east end of Princes Street in Edinburgh. It rises to a height of 108 metres (355 feet) and is another of the city's hills which is made of volcanic rock. It is now renowned for the collection of monuments which include the Nelson Monument, the National Monument (Edinburgh's disgrace), the City Observatory and also monuments to Duguld Stewart and William Playfair.
