Description
A woman and four children stand on the balcony leading to the doorway of a house. The woman wears a full length skirt. The boys and girls look through the wooden rails of the balcony. Material hangs over the handrail beside the children. Notices are attached to the wooden doors. The doors have doormats outside them. The buildings have sash windows, one has a net curtain. A streetlamp with an electric lightbulb is next to a pipe. Litter lies on the flagstones of the path below.

The Grassmarket is a central area situated below Edinburgh Castle. It has been the site of many public executions. A weekly market was held there from 1477 until 1911. The Grassmarket continues to be a popular area for socialising.
