The final scene (Sugawara denju ogiri) from the play 'Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy' ('Sugawara denju tenarai kagami')
This print depicts Act 5 of the play 'Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy'. In this final act Sugawara Michizane's character Kan Shojo takes his revenge on Shihei's retainers, as one by one they are struck down by lightning. The Buddhist priest, Hossho, rubs his rosaries to drive away the storm and the vengeful ghosts of Sugawara and his wife, but stops when he learns of Shihei's evil deeds.
