Title
The Struggle for the Carriage Scene (Sugawara denju kuruma-biki no dan) from the play 'Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy' (Sugawara denju tenarai kagami)
Description
This is Act 3, Scene 1 from the Kabuki play 'Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy'. This known as the 'Struggle for the Carriage' scene. The three characters dressed in red represent the three triplets (from left to right) Matsuomaru, Umeomaru and Sakuramaru. Each costume bears the flower emblem associated with their names (pine, plum and cherry). Umeomaru wears red makeup (kumadori) that identifies his heroic role. In this scene the two brothers Umeomaru and Sakuramaru attack Matsuomaru for his loyalty to the evil Shihei. Shihei stands on top of the carriage, dressed in ceremonial court attire and wears blue makeup, an indication of his villainy.
