Description
Smoke still rises from one of the buildings affected by a recent fire on the High Street, Edinburgh. Behind a wooden barrier on either side of a collapsed building men work to demolish damaged buildings. A soldier carrying a gun patrols the area.

This records the aftermath of one of the many devastating fires to effect the Royal Mile during 1824. The Great Fire of 1824 broke out in Old Assembly Close. It burnt for four days, destroying two tenements and the Tron Kirk. It killed 11 residents and two firemen from the recently formed Edinburgh Fire Engine Establishment. Four hundred people were left homeless.
The High Street is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile that runs from George IV Bridge down to its junction with Jeffrey Street and St. Mary's Street.
