About the artist
Name
Hornel, Edward Atkinson
Biography
Evidence of rich colour and strong pattern in Hornel's work had been in evidence before his visit to Japan with George Henry. From 1898 he produced paintings depicting girls in landscape settings, using photography to stage his paintings. Although this enabled him to deliver a steady supply, the clarity and lightness of touch in this painting is not always evident in later works.
