Biography
William Home Lizars, son of the engraver Daniel Lizars, was born in Edinburgh in 1788. He attended the Royal High School and was apprentice first to his father, and then to John Graham at the Trustees Academy. Following the death of his father he took on responsibility for his mother and family, and so changed his professional focus from painting to the more lucrative business of engraving. He was a prolific and innovative engraver, constantly experimenting with new techniques. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy from its founding in 1826, and an engraver Associate from this date until 1830. He died in Jedburgh in 1859. Notable paintings from his career include 'Reading the Will' and 'Scotch Wedding', both of which were exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1812 and are now in the National Gallery of Scotland. His large output as an engraver included a pictorial record of the Regalia of Scotland, made with Andrew Geddes and John Thompson in 1818.
