The West Port is a street that continues west from Edinburgh's Grassmarket towards Lothian Road. It was the site of the western entrance to Edinburgh through the city wall. In the late 1840's Dr. Thomas Chalmers, following the Disruption of the Church of Scotland in 1843, set about creating his vision of a "territorial" parish model within the West Port, one of the worst slums of Edinburgh. This resulted in the creation of the West Port Territorial Church and Schools. The lithograph is inscribed "To Mr Cowan Esq with Dr Chalmers grateful regards".
