Description
A street of tenement housing in Leith in Edinburgh is festooned with flags and bunting to mark a royal visit. The decorations hang from balconies on each floor of the flats and bunting is strung across the street. In the foreground, a young boy is digging in an area of waste ground which is fenced off from the street.

George VI was crowned in May 1937 following the abdication of his brother Edward VIII in 1936. In July 1937 he came to Edinburgh with Queen Elizabeth and their daughters on his first state visit to Scotland. The programme of events included the presentation of keys to the city to their majesties, state processions, a rain-soaked garden party, a Scottish Youth Rally and firework displays.
