A large crowd is gathered and lines both sides of Princes Street as George VI and his entourage, many of whom are on horseback, proceed along the road. The public are separated from the procession by a row of soldiers. On both sides of the street there is a line of banners and several flags fly from the tops of the buildings. On the right side of the street is the spire of the Scott Monument, behind which can be seen the clock tower of the Balmoral Hotel and in the distance the memorial monuments on top of Calton Hill.

Princes Street is one of the main thoroughfares and shopping areas in Edinburgh. It was created as part of James Craig's New Town development and named in honour of George III's sons. With the exception of St John's Church there is no building on the southern side of Princes Street, allowing spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle and Old Town.
