Potterrow derives its name from its industrial heritage, there having been a large number of pottery workshops in this area. It originally formed part of an important southern approach to the city of Edinburgh which continued along Horses Wynd and Borthwick Close to the High Street. The nearby gateway through the City Walls, originally called Kirk o'Field Port, came to be known as Potterrow Port. The street was drastically remodelled in the 1960's, and the pedestrian underpass created took on the name Potterrow Port. The nearby modern Student Union is called Potterrow.
