Notes
A printmaking method related to etching, but where the technique produces tonal areas rather than lines and the resulting print resembles the flat tints of an ink or wash drawing. A metal plate is coated with resin and fused by heating. The design is usually made by an etched line, but tones are varied by the use of 'stopping out', protecting areas from the acid bath by a coat of varnish. This technique was much favoured by water colourists, particularly for topographical prints.
