Windmill Lane - east side, looking towards Buccleuch Place

Description

The view along the cobbled length of Windmill Lane, Edinburgh. Stone built houses line the street with tall chimney stacks. Street lights are fixed to the outside of two of the buildings. In the street various groups of people stand in Edwardian clothing including men, women and children. One woman carries a baby in a bonnet while another young child in a pinafore holds on to her skirts.

This is a photograph by a member of the Edinburgh Photographic Society.

Windmill Lane lies off Buccleuch Place in the area occupied by Edinburgh University. Windmill Lane was created as part of the feuing for George Square in 1779. The name refers to a windmill that was built near the site in 1598 to supply breweries with water. This was demolished by 1759, but the surrounding streets all took their name from it.
