Gilmerton Quarry

Description

Men are working in Gilmerton Quarry, Edinburgh. At the base of the quarry two men are attempting to move a large stone. A third person sits nearby. A horse-drawn cart is being used to carry stone and the horse has a harness and blinkers on. There is a large rock jutting out from the quarry with a footbridge connected to the rock. People are crossing the walkway. On another outcrop two people can be seen.

Gilmerton village existed at least as far back as the 16th Century. Mining of coal and limestone was for centuries the principal economic activity of the village. Gilmerton Cove is an extensive, historic underground dwelling in the area. Gilmerton is now part of the City of Edinburgh.
