The parish of Kirkliston has its origins in the late 12th century when a church was established on this site overlooking the River Almond. Although Kirkliston Parish Church has been remodelled over time, it retains some of the earliest fabric, dating from around 1200, including the former south doorway which is often compared to the west doorway of Holyrood Abbey.
The bell tower of Kirkliston Parish Church supports a birdcage belfry with a single bell. The bell is dated 1687 and is still used to call people to worship. Find out more about

.
The first surviving mention of a parliamentary assembly in Scotland in 1235 took place in Kirkliston. The parliament developed from meetings of the ‘King’s great council’, which were gatherings of nobles and churchmen who advised the King on policy and matters of justice.
