This tower in Leith was originally one of three windmills built in the late seventeenth century. It was built around 1685 or 1686 by Robert Mylne, the king’s master mason, beside a new protective seawall. It was altered and used as a signal tower during the Napoleonic War. It provided a means of passing messages by flag to ships coming ashore about sea depths.
