Hawthorn & Co. were originally a Newcastle-upon-Tyne firm manufacturing locomotives. In 1860, with a base in Leith they started making marine engines and boilers. In 1912, the company acquired the shipyard of Thomas Morton & Co which was situated on the site occupied today in Leith by Ocean Terminal. In 1924, Henry Robb Ltd. took over the shipyard of Hawthorns and the adjacent Ramage & Ferguson. Shipbuilding ended in Leith with the closure of Henry Robb's yard in 1984.
