Named on Craig's original New Town plan as St. George's Square, but changed in 1786 to Charlotte Square after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III. Around this time only one third of the Square was built due to the high cost of houses.

This sketch view looks onto North Charlotte Street towards the castle. The first feu in Charlotte Square was granted in 1792 but after the building of the first house, it took a considerable time for others to be built. By 1800, six of the nine plots on the north side of the Square had been built on. Building commenced on the west side of the square in 1803 and then on the east side in 1810. Charlotte Square was finished in 1820, almost thirty years after its design.
