The remains of Portobello Pier can just be seen on the beach today. Built in the 1870s, the pier once housed a tea room, a concert hall and other entertainment. It was the main departure point for steamships of a company ran by the Galloway family. These ships, or steam packets, took visitors for trips around the Firth of Forth, with a regular service to Aberdour and stations along the Fife coast.
The pier was eventually closed shortly after World War I with the closure of the shipping company.
