A sepia photograph from an album of photographs compiled by Margaret Reid, nee Barton, last resident of Lauriston Castle. It shows a woman artist at her easel in her studio. She is wearing a full, long dark dress, and is painting a scene of a stage with drapes, a chair and a small floral ceramic decoration. The room around her is furnished with other works, frames, and an ornate chandelier.

This photograph is from an album of photographs compiled, and likely to have been taken by, Mrs. Margaret Reid, nee Barton, the last resident of Lauriston Castle. She and her husband William Reid bequeathed the Castle and its contents to the nation, and it became a museum in the late 1920s.

Margaret Reid was a keen photographer, and some of the images in this album seem to be her associations with other artists in Edinburgh from before she married. Helen Edwards, Applied Art Curator at Museums & Galleries Edinburgh spotted some of the interiors of what seem to be an artist's studio in work by the painter Christina Patterson Ross.
