Description

One Alpine pattern sample mug. Made from buff stoneware. Egg-shaped with looped handle with centre ridged. Handpainted floral design ' Alpine' in brown-yellow, light blue and dark blue on one side of body, leaf design on other side. Two narrow and one broad band of light blue around rim. 'SAMPLE' handpainted in light blue on handle. Oatmeal coloured background. Maker's mark: impressed mark - 'BUCHAN / PORTOBELLO / SCOTLAND within a thistle emblem and brown stamped mark '255/10 / ALPINE M1-287'. Decorator's mark: hand painted letter K in brown on base.

The Buchan company had a range of set designs with evocative names such as "Brittany", "Iona", "Bluebell", and perhaps their most famous, the "Thistle" pattern. Each painter decorator had their own mark which they painted by hand on the base of each piece they painted.

There appear to be several different decorator's marks with the letter K. This object is decorated in Alpine pattern, which was the centenary design for 1967. There are a few Alpine pattern pieces marked with the smaller letter K in the collection and a more substantial number of pieces marked with the more elongated finer painted letter K mark. All are factory sample pieces.
