Front of Ekco monochrome television set, c. 1955

Description

One Ekco monochrome television set. The television set is housed in a large wooden rectangular box. There is a small rectangular convex glass screen above five bakelite dials. Below the dials is a mesh grill and the name of the manufacturer, 'ECKO'. The five dials are marked, 'CONTRAST', 'V', 'BRIGHTNESS', 'H' and 'VOLUME'. The reverse of the television set carries warning and caution labels as well as manufacturer details.

This television dates from the early 1950s. The choice of channels was very limited then, and colour television was still not widely available. It is on this type of televisions that millions tuned in to watch the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Technology has changed so much, it is astonishing to think of the many ways people will be able to watch the coronation of King Charles III in June 2023.
