The Caledonian Distillery was at one time one of Scotland's largest. It began in 1855 ono a site next to Haymarket Station in Dalry. It closed in 1988, but the chimney still stands today.
Distilling is a potentially dangerous process, where highly flammable alcohol fumes can catch fire and cause catastrophic damage. The distillery therefore had its own fire service, on hand to extinguish any fires.
