Description

One black and white photograph print of a group of potters working at the A, W. Buchan & Co. pottery at Portobello in January 1972. The three men are working on various tressle benches loaded with items either ready for firing in the kiln, or already fired. Above them is the cam system with belts powering the wheels for throwing the pots.

As part of the Auld Reekie Retold collections project, 2019-2022, four ex-employees of the Buchans company were invited to look at the collection of photographs and pottery items at the Museums Collections Centre. This photograph was discussed. The painter-decorators were usually women, whereas those making the pieces and working in the kilns were men. The two teams worked well together, and the ex-employees talked about the camaraderie at the pottery in the 1970s.
